Under the Bridge
The Lexington Gateway Mural is coming to life under the I-240 Bridge downtown Asheville, where it crosses Lexington Avenue and Broadway, on the six concrete piers supporting the bridge. We aspire to eventually cover the entire 6,000 square feet of surface, on both underlying streets. The Lexington Avenue side will be completed in 2008. This mural will transform a dark passageway into an inspiring and imaginative entrance to an exceptionally artistic district of the downtown area. We hope this project will be the first of many grassroots reclamations of our public spaces.
A team of 6 local artists has been working on designs. The mural is to portray original images of local characters and scenes that represent the unique Asheville community. Portraits of local people will take up the majority of the space. Themes include Sustainability, Arts and Culture, and Community, and Asheville Saints.
The Asheville Saints will be standing portraits of actual Asheville people, painted on the insides of the 3ft by 12ft+ concrete columns. We are taking community input for characters to be memorialized, and establishing a committee to choose the individuals. CLICK HERE TO NOMINATE YOUR ASHEVILLE SAINT
